PLM for Technical Designers: A Day in the Details

Tech packs, fit sessions, vendor comments, and quality checks: managing the details that bring products to life

Technical designers work in the gap between design intent and factory reality. The factory needs measurement specifications, construction details, and a bill of materials accurate enough to produce. The technical designer is often the role production depends on most.

Here are five jobs on a technical designer's list, and what changes when PLM for technical designers replaces a disconnected process spread across a shared drive, a version stamped spreadsheet, and a crowded inbox.

Respond to Pending Factory Comments

Vendors and mills often work in different time zones, so comments land overnight. A vendor in Vietnam questions the collar construction on the proto. A mill asks whether 180 GSM is acceptable in place of 200. In an email workflow, each one is a separate thread to open and answer.

In PLM, those messages sit against the style, next to the sample and tech pack they refer to. Supplier Relationship Management keeps vendor history with the style, so the answer is written once. The technical design workflow holds because there is one record per style.

Run the Fit Session and Capture Changes

The fit model arrives. Take each point of measure against the graded spec and check it against tolerance. Raise the armhole a quarter inch. Shorten the back rise. Add ease through the sleeve cap.

Fit sessions are where notes go missing. Good fit sample management captures it at the source: measurements, photos front, back, and side, and comments logged against that sample. Three fittings later, the history explains why the armhole now sits where it does.

Turn Fit Comments Into a Revised Spec

When done manually, this task quietly consumes an entire afternoon. Update the measurement spec, regrade across the size range, redline the technical sketch, and rewrite the construction notes that changed.

Spec sheet management keeps that revision clean. Version three supersedes version two, the change is stamped and attributed, and the vendor opens the current spec, not a Tuesday email attachment. Sewing the wrong revision is an expensive mistake and it usually starts with a file name.

The same revision reaches the visuals too. The Adobe Illustrator plugin and 3D integration keep the technical sketch and the 3D garment tied to the same spec.

Build a Tech Pack for a New Vendor

Long-standing vendors fill gaps from experience. A new factory simply cannot do the same, so the tech pack detail is critical. First samples set the tone, and a thin tech pack sets a good vendor up to fail.

Tech pack software assembles the document from data already in the system. Flat and graded spec, bill of materials with trims and findings, stitch types and seam allowances, label and artwork placement, care content, and packing instructions. When the spec changes next week, the pack changes with it.

Sign Off Color and Trims, Then Set the Quality Plan

Approvals run alongside everything else. Lab dips or strike-offs awaiting feedback. Digital Color Approvals move those rounds off couriers and onto a screen. Each lab dip is judged against the digital standard rather than a swatch in a lightbox or under office light, so approvals mean the same thing in every time zone.

Then the part that pays for itself later. Set inspection points, AQL levels, and measurement tolerances now, while the style is in development. Total Quality Management feeds defect data back to the spec, so the same fault does not return next season. Quality becomes part of the specification instead of a complaint process.
